Coiling is the ancient art of spiraling and stitching—turning humble pine needles into something both useful and beautiful. In this beginner-friendly workshop, basket weaving artist, Lorraine Lapekes, will walk you through the foundational techniques of pine needle coiling. You’ll leave with a small basket in progress, a handful of new skills, and everything you need to keep weaving at home: a needle, cordage, pine needles, and a gauge.

The Details
Learn the Basics
Not all Ponderosa Pine needles are created equal—learn how to choose the right kind for coiling. But in the workshop, prepared needles will be ready for you to use. You’ll get comfortable with the tools of the trade (gauge, needle, cordage), and practice a simple stitch as you begin your very own basket.
Craft Your Pace
Lorraine will guide you through each step and offer hands-on help as you go. Also, you will be in the supported company of other crafty learners. You’ll take home your starter basket, supplies and resources so you can continue at your own pace.
Community Potluck!
Nothing says community like a potluck. Breaking bread while building bridges, so to speak. This workshop will include a potluck, a chance to talk about what you are learning, share experiences, and get to know one another. Please bring something along to share with your neighbors!

Lorraine Lapekes
Lorraine Lapekes first fell in love with pine needle basketry at the Sisters Harvest Faire in 2022, and hasn’t stopped coiling since. A self-proclaimed “novice crafter,” Lorraine learned through tutorials, books, trial, and plenty of error. She lives among the long-needle Ponderosas of Central Oregon, where she also dabbles in watercolor, gourd art, photography, and fiber crafts. Her approach is thoughtful, supportive, and geared toward helping beginners feel right at home.

What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing—avoid loose sleeves.
What should I bring?
Notebook, pen, scissors/snips, measuring tape, needle nose pliers/grippers, thimble, and needle threader. A handout with a materials list will be emailed before class.
Can kids attend?
This session is designed for mature teens and curious adults.
Will there be food?
Yes! We’re doing a potluck. Bring a dish to share, plus your own plate, utensils, and water bottle.
What if I don’t finish my basket?
Don’t worry, this is normal. You’ll learn how to store your project and finish it at home, along with tips on prepping pine needles and a take-home guide.
