Carol Fox is a writer and retired RN who raises goats for fun. She wanted a volunteer interested in learning goat husbandry in exchange for help. School of Ranch Extend matched her with Melissa Dugan, a hobby farmer interested in goats and willing to help in exchange for learning
That's School of Ranch Extend. We extend the time our seniors can do what they love. We help people extend a helping hand. We extend the tradition that Central Oregon is a community rooted to its land and its people.
Mornings seem colder. Buckets heavier. Seasons shorter. We grow older, but each year, nature regenerates. Babies come. Shoots sprout. Weeds fester. And we soldier on, tough, resilient, committed, fortified with wisdom accumulated over the years. But while the spirit thrives, the body struggles. Sound familiar? Let School of Ranch Extend help. We'll match you with a community member ready to help, listen and learn.
You always wanted to raise sheep. Farm. Fix machines. Make soap. But where to start? There's so much to know and no way to get the hands-on experience you need. To decide if you really want to take the plunge, you need to see for yourself what it really takes in terms of time and effort. Let School of Ranch Extend help. We'll match you with an experienced senior who will value your help and share their hard-earned know-how.
100% of Contributions Go to Local High School Students
School of Ranch is a volunteer-run 501c3 nonprofit. We employ high school interns to run our operations, and we pay them $20 an hour. A contribution will not just help School of Ranch Extend, but also keeps local high school students employed. All contributions are paid out to local high school students. Please contribute today and make a difference in your community.
If we make a match and the participants decide to work together, we ask that they each join School of Ranch. The cost for an individual is $100 a year. Also, to keep everyone safe, we require background checks for all participants. Background checks are under $50. See below for more info.
We require that all participants complete a background check. We specify with the background check vendor red flag issues that would potentially disqualify a participant. We tell applicants what we are screening for so they can back out if they want in advance.
You need to have ranch, farm, trade or artisans skills, and be willing to teach them to someone. And you need to be able to provide in-person, hands-on experiences. If a volunteer wants to learn about goat husbandry you have to have goats.
You need to be able to help perform the tasks required by your mentor. You need to be available to do the work. You need to be reliable. You need to be willing to work with seniors.
Yes! So long as you have a skill you are highly proficient at, we can look to find you a volunteer to help you on other things but learn what you can teach.
We recommend that seniors build a small network of volunteers to reduce the risk of relying on one person. Life happens, right? So if you come with that small network, great!
School of Ranch is a volunteer-run Central Oregon-based 501c3 nonprofit. We hire skilled community members to teach practical and artisan skills. Our mission is to educate, help small local businesses grow, and provide common ground for people regardless of politics, age, background or beliefs.
