Build basic DIY electric skills and restore power and light safely and easily with this hands-on workshop. Learn troubleshooting steps, how to fix small problems, and when it's the right time to call an electrician. This one-session workshop will have you working safely with electricity in a snap, not a zap!

After this workshop, you'll understand the basics of residential 120v in the field. You'll learn how to test a hotwire, how to start looking for answers in your electrical problems, and how to know when you really do need to bring in an electrician. And you'll be able to do all the things we teach you safely.
Save money and know what to do in emergencies. We will cover electrical breaker boxes, loose wires, splicing new wires in, and many aspects that might be plaguing your system. This is an all hands on class and out of the classroom. Get your hands dirty and fix things on the fly while learning to deal with real world problems.
Oregon has some of the highest standards for our state's infrastructure in the country and most of the world. It's tricky to know what laws are in play. This class will help you navigate the key features that you need to know.
James is a multifaceted individual with a passion for craftsmanship and education. With over 15 years of experience in carpentry, coupled with expertise in electrical work and machine mechanics, James is adept at a wide array of trades. And he loves sharing his knowledge and helping people build skills. Born and raised in Culver, James joined the Marines where he was trained in automotive, jet turbine, and solid fuel rocket mechanics, earning numerous certifications. He also is certified in asbestos abatement and has a safety certification from OSHA. Now back in Central Oregon, he gives back to the community through School of Ranch.

Just something to take notes with. You are more than welcome to bring your tools from home to get more of a feel for them, but we can provide the tools.
No. We are working with live electrical systems. There is a bit of danger. We need to keep everybody's attention and stay safe.
School of Ranch is a Central Oregon based 501c3 nonprofit. We hire experienced locals to teach practical homestead skills, live and in person. Our mission is to educate, support local small businesses, and to create common ground for people regardless of politics, age, background or beliefs.
