In this class we will be exploring transferable skills that relate to troubleshooting and repair of all 4 stroke engines and 2 stroke engines. Dialed down to a lawn mower engine, we will give a solid foundation of understanding to help you know what tools you will need and how to find the answers, no matter what engine/motor you are working on. Four workshop series!
The first thing you notice about James is the rocks, which he quickly will point out are not just rocks, but gemstones that he and his partner found. James is more more than just a gemstone guy - he's a gem! He's a highly trained mechanic who enjoys nothing more than sharing what he knows and building skills in others. A native of Culver, he enlisted in the Marines, where was trained in automotive, jet turbine and solid fuel rocket mechanics, earning many certifications along the way. He returned to Central Oregon looking to give back to his community, share his skills and hobbies, which beyond gemstones include astronomy, another course area he's teaching.
Saturday June 3, 10am or Thursday June 8 5:30pm
Engines are precise machines. How do you find the specific torque of a bolt without breaking it? The internet is an amazing research tool for mechanics. Too bad you're not one. To get to the right info, you need to have right right vocabulary, After this session you'll be equipped to find what you need get help from forums.
Saturday June 10, 10am or Thursday June 15 530pm
Did you know that your spark plugs can tell you if your piston rings are out, head gasket blown, or if your voltage is off? Attendees will be able to use proper technique and tools to replace a spark plug, and to read their secret code. They'll also be able to use a borescope to examine a piston chamber and diagnose problems - canted piston, cracking, damage to valves, foreign object damage.
Saturday June 17, 10am or Thursday June 22 530pm
Like your spark plugs, your oil longs to tell you what's wrong with your engine. Now you'll be able to listen. You'll learn about oil, how to drain and replace it, and prolong its life. You'll also be able to analyze it - is water in it? gear shredding? cracks on oil pan? All the while you'll be working with a partner to fix that broken lawnmower.
Saturday June 24, 10am or Thursday June 29 530pm
Every mechanic breaks a couple of bolts a week. Attendees will be able to deal with this problem and other like dealing with stripped nuts and extremely rusted pieces. Attendees will be able to creat improvised tools and to use a Tap and Die. We'll also finish up that the lawnmower by fixing problems other than the engine.
$399 for all four three-hour sessions. And we'll have 10 working lawnmowers at the end, so half the participants go home with a toy!
