Healthy Pastures For Happy Horses: Workshop Series

Pasture Dream or Nightmare?

You can't judge a bale by its color, but you can know its secrets.  Attend this workshop series to build the skills to create a healthy pasture and provide the correct nutrition to your horses.  From building healthy soil, to finding the best quality hay for your horse, to trying regenerative ag, join us!

Scott Duggan, OSU Extension's Horse and Pasture Leader for Central Oregon

Scott Duggan knows horses, pastures, and what it takes to keep both happy and healthy in Central Oregon.  Scott brings years of personal experience and professional training and a healthy sense of humor to his hands-on, informative workshops.  Joining Scott is his colleague, Dr. Tracy Wilson, OSU's soil maven, and host of local experts committed to helping you raise and keep your horses and pastures in great shape for years.

What's under hoof and in the bale matters. You will come away able to identify the components of soil and to implement best practices for soil health. You also will be able to evaluate a bale of hay and make more informed choices about how much and what to feed your horses.

Wednesday April 12 5:30pm to 8:00 With our rainfall, heat, and soil, it takes special knowledge and skills to grow a pasture.  You will leave able to determine goals for your land, identify the best forage species to grow, implement best practices for renovation, and make the right choices for weed control.  Shazam!

Nobody wants to poison their horse!  You will build the skills to identify poisonous plants and avoid overgrazing, a leading cause of obesity.  You will be able to implement Management Intensive Grazing (MIG), and take a pasture inventory.  Farm tour as well!

Got 10 acres of dust and rock?  You will come away able to identify the five pillars of regenerative agriculture, to plant to attract pollinators, and to develop a plan to build windbreaks.  And just in case the last session didn't scare you enough, we'll dive into plant toxins.  Farm tour as well!

Do I have to attend all workshops?

You can attend as many or as few as you want.  

What will I be able to do?

 At the end of the series, among other skills, you will be able to:

  • Identify signs of unhealthy pastures
  • Implement best practices for renovating pastures
  • Work toward creating healthy soil
  • Try grazing management techniques
  • Implement healthy practices when grazing livestock/horses on pasture
  • Put best practices for growing healthy pasture to work
  • Identify poisonous plants growing in Central Oregon pastures
  • Prepare for managing drought

Where are the workshops held?

Classroom sessions will be held on OSU Extension campuses throughout Central Oregon.  Outdoor sessions will be held on local ranches and farms.

Can I bring my kids?

Families are welcome. For outdoor sessions please consider that horses and other animals, and ranch and farm equipment can be dangerous.  Make responsible choices for your family and the safety of others.

How much does it cost

All sessions are contribute-what you want or can, influding come for free.  These sessions cost hundreds of dollars to produce.  Proceed go to School of Ranch, a nonprofit, to cover production costs and other mission-oriented programs.

Will there be a potluck suppers?

 Yes!  We look forward to meeting and mingling with you and your neighbors.  Please bring something along if you can!
