Learn the fundamentals of safe and effective trailer towing in this interactive, hands-on-the-steering wheel workshop. Designed for beginners, this session will cover understanding tow vehicle and trailer components, proper hook-up techniques, and how towing impacts driving dynamics. Participants will practice with their own trailers to gain practical experience navigating a tight driving course, and backing-up. You will head home with more confidence and skill on the road. If you don’t have a trailer, we can help.

The Details
Learn Safe Practices
Discover the nuts and bolts of safe towing! We’ll cover everything from identifying the key components of your tow vehicle and trailer to understanding how towing impacts your driving dynamics. You will be provided with a safety check list to take with you on road trips or keep in your glove box.
Hands-On Practice
You’ll get real-world experience looking at a variety of hook-ups, go over pre-trip inspections, and understanding how to inspect your trailer lights, brakes and safety chains. Then, test your skills on a tight driving course, with only cones to run over, learning forward navigation and backing up.

Kelly Patrick
Kelly Patrick is a life-long resident of Central Oregon with over 40 years experience driving & towing personal trailers, as well as Deschutes County Sheriffs Office trailers and equipment. He has completed Skid Car and Emergency Vehicle Operations training on multiple occasions. For the last 10+ years he has been responsible for certifying Deschutes County Search & Rescue to tow trailers.

Do I need my own trailer and tow vehicle?
Not necessarily. Depending on attendance, we can partner you with someone who bring both. It’s better of you have your own. You can rent a trailer cheap at either U-Haul or Hooker Creek. Driving forward with a small trailer usually isn’t the problem. 🙂
What should I wear?
Dress for the weather.
What should I bring?
Bring your truck and trailer, a snack, and water to drink.
Can minors attend?
If you have a drivers license, you can attend. You must have your own ticket!
What about food?
Bring water and a snack.
