You’ll connect what you see to basic hoof anatomy and biomechanics so trimming decisions make sense. Finally you’ll apply that understanding through guided hands-on trimming to move the hoof toward balance and healthy barefoot function.

Score Hoof Structures
Learn to score major hoof structures for distortion using a practical 0–5 standard. You’ll gain confidence identifying what’s within normal range and what signals imbalance or stress.
Hoof Hero! Spot Imbalances
Develop the ability to identify structural imbalances and communicate practical trimming adjustments. Whether you trim yourself or work with a professional, you’ll be better equipped to advocate for healthy barefoot balance.
Hands-On Trimming
Participants learn about trimming tools and, with guidance, use their hoof mapping scores and anatomical understanding to begin trimming the hoof toward better balance. You may bring your own horse to the workshop for personalized hands-on guidance.
Community Potluck!
Nothing says community like a potluck. Breaking bread while building bridges, so to speak. This workshop will include a potluck, a chance to talk about what you are learning, share experiences, and get to know one another. We’ll supply the main protein. Please bring something along to share with your neighbors!
Workshop Leader
Dr. Timothy Rogers
Dr. Tim is a 2012 graduate of Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine as well as a twice-graduate of Mission Farrier School, an E.L.P.O based training, which he attended right after vet school. Tim has been passionate about understanding and working with equine feet since his first semester in veterinary college. He is always looking for a rational and clear objective way to think about the equine foot based on basic principles of anatomy and biomechanics. His passion is equine foot rehabilitation, especially laminitis cases, and he brings to the stall a set of skills that includes composite and rocker shoes, dental impression material, glue and casting. His goal as a podiatrist and teacher is to empower horse owners to be able to evaluate their own horse’s feet and make informed decisions based on clear anatomical and physiological principles.

What should I wear?
Dress for the weather. Wear jeans and hard-toe boots, as we will be working with horses outside.
What should I bring?
A contribution to the potluck and work gloves. We need three participants to bring a horse. If you are interested, let us know.
Can kids attend?
Minors (14+) are welcome so long as they are mature and can work around horses safely.
Will there be food?
We will have a potluck! We bring the main protein. Bring something to share with your neighbors.
What is School of Ranch?
School of Ranch is a Central Oregon based 501c3 nonprofit. We hire experienced locals to teach practical and artisan skills, live and in person. Beyond teaching skills and helping grow our workshop leader’s businesses, we create common ground for neighbors.
