Chainsaw 101 is your no-experience-needed intro to using a chainsaw with skill and confidence. We’ll start with the most important part—safety—and move through all the essentials: personal protective equipment (PPE), maintenance, starting up, and making your first cut. You’ll get time to observe, then practice hands-on with direct guidance. By the end, you’ll not only know your chain from your bar oil, but you’ll be making clean, confident cuts while understanding how wood behaves.

The Details
Safety First
We kick things off by making sure you’re geared up, informed and safe. You’ll learn to identify and use the right personal protective equipment, get to know your saw before it starts, and understand your stance, surroundings, and mindset before every cut.
Tool TLC
Chainsaws need love too. You’ll learn how to tension a chain, sharpen it safely, and clean your saw so it stays reliable. These basics save time, frustration, and wear on your gear.
Make the Cut
Feel the thrill of your first real cut—safely and with supervision. We’ll teach you how to “read the fiber” of the wood to predict how it’ll behave, making each cut smarter and safer.

Aaron Stump is the owner of Stump Regeneration, where he focuses on earthworks, water systems, fire mitigation, and sustainable construction. He holds a Permaculture Design Certificate and brings regenerative land care into everything he teaches. A former chef with a passion for sustainability, Aaron blends practical, time-tested skills with a deep respect for the land. Expect hands-on learning, hearty laughs, and plenty of useful takeaways.

What should I wear?
Wear sturdy work boots, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt—no loose clothing. Required gear includes safety chaps, gloves, eye protection, and hearing protection.

What should I bring?
If you have a chainsaw, chaps and helmet, bring it! We’ll provide a chainsaw if you don’t. You must bring your own gloves, safety glasses and helmet (bike or snowboard helmet could suffice). We have a few sets of gear for you to see examples and use if needed. Bring water and a snack too!
Will there be food?
Nope, but feel free to bring snacks and water bottle!
Can kids attend?
Yes—ages 14+ with a responsible adult. Everyone must have their own ticket!
