There's nothing like the feel of handmade tools. And being taught by the person who made them is a special treat. You will leave this workshop with a new appreciation for the ingenuity of our forbearers, and the skills to continue on the path to expertise in spoon making and carving.
Over the course of this three hour workshop, you'll learn how to transform a block of wood into this practical, personal tool that you will use every day. You'll learn safe practices, techniques for gauging depth and proportion, and how to use the key tools of the trade to produce your very own carved spoon.
Don't you hate it when you buy a ticket to a workshop and find it being endlessly rescheduled or outright cancelled? We use a pre-registration model instead. Pre-registration is free; we only charge your credit card when we're ready to schedule (and you say ok). Sign up now!
George Blackman is a local treasure. As much historian as craftsman, George fashions his own tools from machines that are twice his age, each with its own storied past. Blacksmith, sculptor, inventor, carver, woodworker, you name it, all rolled up into one engaging, enthusiastic member of our Central Oregon community. George built his career as a welder, but his passion is in working with traditional tools to handcraft practical works of art.
$125 for a 3 hour workshop plus $10 for materials. We supply everything you need except safety glasses.
This workshop is in the shop of the instructor on the north side of Redmond.
We supply everything you need except safety glasses. Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for a woodshop. Please wear boots or close-toed shoes. We'll be in a heated shop, so no need for overly warm clothes.
We will be working with sharp implements in an active woodshop. You may buy a ticket for a child, but you must accompany them and they must be responsible and able to handle the tools. 16+ is ok. If you want to bring someone younger, reach out to us to discuss. Use our contact form.
School of Ranch is a Central OR-based 501c3 nonprofit. We hires skilled community members to teach practical and artisan skills. Our mission is to educate and create paying gigs for tradespeople and artisans. Most importantly, it is to provide common ground for people of all political stripes, beliefs, backgrounds and ages to learn and work together. After all, we all can agree that if your gate is broken it would be a good idea to learn how to fix it.
At a time when our politicians and media only want to sew discord, we help remind people that as Americans we have much more in common than those trying to divide us would have us believe. We the people, baby.
