You always wanted to weld, right? After our three-session program you'll be able to build small projects and "farmer weld" around your property - fix stuff! The sessions are held in a professional welder's shop. Small groups, max of 6. The program is three 3-hour sessions for one price.
When: We’ll schedule this workshop again when we get at least 3 pre-registrants.
Where: 7766 Costanoan St, Powell Butte
Price: $375 + $60 for supplies
Pre-registration is free; we only charge your credit card when we're ready to schedule (and you say ok). When 3 people pre-register, we'll set up the next workshop with your input on dates!
You will build the skills to handle repair jobs around the homestead and to take on small projects:
-The basics of MIG welding
-Joining steel materials
-Prepping work surfaces & materials
-Intro to metals and materials
-
We have plenty for you to do, but many participants bring in a project they buy for in-class assembly. Firepits, rocket stoves, a wine rack, even a kid's catapult - these are among the many small projects you'l be able to tackle at this workshop and at home after you complete the program.
Joe Slattery, a professional welder and experienced trainer, leads these workshops. With a maximum enrollment of six, he will work with you at your own pace. His goal is to help you solve problems with welding, not just learn how to weld.
We take safety seriously. You will be required to wear proper clothing, helmets, and eye protection. We rent helmets and gloves, or you can bring your own. You will be taught safe procedures and materials handling. We will not tolerate unsafe behavior.
Joe Slattery is professional welder and metalworker. Originally from Arizona, Joe has called Central Oregon home for decades. He cut his welding teeth with Lockheed, eventually running their training and induction program for new welders. Joe has worked on everything metal under the sun, and his metal shop is a showcase of technology and useful equipment. Underneath that welder exterior though beats the heart of a true educator. Joe is patient and a great communicator, and has been able to help everyone from teenagers to crusty old ranch hands build welding skills. We're very lucky to have Joe on our team, and are sure you will enjoy his workshop.
We supply a welder for everyone, grinders, wire, and metal for practice.. You will need a helmet and gloves. We rent them, but if you plan to weld, you really should buy them now. Any good set of welding gloves will do. Your helmet should be comfortable and should auto-darken. If you want to rent, we charge $10 each to rent a helmet or gloves. Pay the instructor on site.
Welding is a safe activity if you take proper precautions and follow the rules. We are very strict about safe practices, particularly clothing. You must wear closed-toed leather shoes or boots, preferably boots. Wear jeans or heavy cotton pants. The shop is heated to around 60 degrees, so it's a comfortable working environment. Wear a heavy cotton top that doesn't gather, or short sleeves. If you have a welding jacket, great! You just don't want wear something that gathers so that hot metal can land and stay.
Minors can attend if accompanied by an adult. They need to be physicaly able to handle a welder.
We used to allow this, but found that helping people set up and use their equipment took too much time away from other participants. You can talk with Joe about helping you, which he can decide to do on his own for a consulting fee.
We don't serve food at this workshop. Please bring a snack or something, and water.
