You will build the skills to handle repair jobs around the homestead and to take on small projects. You will learn to:
-Set up a welding machine
-Basics of flux core welding
-How to join steel materials
-Prep work surfaces & materials
-Understand different metals and materials for welding

We have plenty for you to do and practice on, but many participants bring in a small project they buy for in-class assembly. Firepits, rocket stoves, birdhouses, swing out work bench stools and the catapult for kids, shown above-are among the many small projects you'll be able to tackle at this workshop and at home after you complete the program.

Jack Stearns, a professional welder and experienced instructor, leads these workshops. With a maximum enrollment of six, he will work with you at your own pace guiding you along the way. His goal is to help you solve problems with welding, not just learn how to weld.

We take safety seriously. You will be required to wear proper clothing, shoes/boots, helmet, and welding gloves. You will be taught safe procedures and materials handling. We will have helmets, jackets and gloves if you do not have any or want to try some gear before you buy, or you can bring your own. Safety is our top priority.

Jack is a skilled welder and fabricator from Redmond, bringing a wide range of real-world experience to School of Ranch workshops. His background includes heavy equipment repair, architectural and structural steel welding, custom metalwork, and CNC plasma table operation. Jack is also an experienced welding instructor, having taught at Central Oregon Community College, where he honed his ability to break down complex techniques and help students build confidence with hands-on practice. He is passionate about creating supportive learning environments where novice welders can develop strong foundational skills and take pride in their craft.

We continuously train our team of mechanics to provide the highest levels of technical expertise for our customers. Boondock Garage believes in building you the vehicle you deserve and getting you out on the road or trail as soon, and safely, as possible. We do lift kits, light bars, and other off road accessories to personalize your vehicle with practical (or impractical) purpose.

We set the date of the first session via a Doodle poll of pre-registrants. We set the dates for the remaining sessions at the first workshop. We have found this the easiest way to get everyone to agree on dates.
We supply a welder, helmet, jacket, and gloves for everyone, along with wire and metal for practice. You bring a project from one of the ones we'll review with you at the workshop.
We are very strict about safe practices, particularly clothing. You must wear closed-toed leather shoes or boots. Wear jeans or heavy cotton pants. The shop is heated, so it's a comfortable working environment. Wear a heavy cotton top that doesn't gather or short sleeves. If you have a welding jacket, bring it! Don't wear anything that is made of nylon, synthetic or something that gathers so hot metal can land and stay.
We encourage you to work on a project in this workshop. Here is a list of approved projects you can purchase. Projects not on this list require Jack's permission. Please try to keep projects simple, for example, not more than 10 pieces and you must be able to fit it through a door.
Minors can attend if accompanied by an adult. They need to be physically able to handle a welder, and they must have their own ticket.
No. We used to allow this, but found that helping people set up and use their equipment took too much time away from other participants.
Bring a snack and water bottle.
